Herbert Hope, Sr.

Herbert Hope Sr. ("Stoonook"), 68, died Dec 25, 1999, at the Alaska Native Medical Center Hospital. A Christian memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28 at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 8th & F Streets, Anchorage, Father Norman Elliott, officiating. A celebration of life & potluck dinner will follow at the Fairview Community Recreation Center: 6 - 9 p.m., sponsored by the Alaska Native Brotherhood. Memorial services will also be held in Sitka on Thursday, December 30, 6:00 p.m., at the ANB Hall.

Herb was born Sept 15, 1931 in Sitka, Alaska, and lived there 30 years, working as a commercial fisherman and journeyman carpenter. In 1969 Herb moved to Anchorage with his family, accepting a job with the United States Government, Bureau of Indian Affairs Housing Department, where he was employed for 30 years, until his death.

Herb was very active in re-capturing Alaska Native culture efforts. He served as the President of the Alaska Native Brotherhood - Anchorage Chapter, and as the Grand President of the ANB for the State of Alaska in 1979. He also served as President of the Tlingit & Haida Native organization. Herb was a member of the AFN Board, the T & H Executive Committee, and as an advisor for the Alaska Native Heritage Center. He worked hard at teaching and promoting Alaska Native arts, crafts, dances, and history for Tlingit & Haida in Anchorage and Southeast. Herb and his brother Fred documented and organized the Kiks.ádi survival march, in 1994 and again in 1996, which was a re-enactment of the route the Kiks.ádi took following the 1804 battle at Indian River in Sitka between the Tlingits and the Russians. Herb was a member of the Kiks.ádi, a Raven clan.

Herb enjoyed carving, painting, boat building, fishing, and spending time with his large extended family. He was lovingly known as "Dad" by many individuals that he nurtured and cared for throughout his life. He will be dearly missed by his many friends and large family.

Herb is survived by his wife Hannah Hope, children Janice Lauth, Patti Sundberg, Lynelle Hope, Juli Donn, Doug & Ed Hope; brothers Percy & Fred Hope and Richard Lundy; sisters Margaret McVey & Ellen Hays; daughter-in-law Charlamai Hope; sons-in-law Richard Lauth, Robert Sundberg & James Donn; step daughters Karen Boyles, Emma John, Beverly, Dawn & Tina Adams; step sons Patrick, Tim & Donald Adams; mother-in-law Hannah Solomon, sisters-in-law Regina Varner, Belva Ansaknok & Daisy Stevens; brothers-in-law Mardow, Paul, Jonathon, Vernon, Ronnie, Franklin & Peter Solomon; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Herb was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Lorraine Hope, and his brothers Andrew John Hope, and Alfred Willard. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred, Percy, Ed, Doug, Andy & Gerry Hope; Jonathon Solomon, Harold Kitka and Frank Sam. Memorial contributions may be made to Hannah Hope. P.O.
