Installing a Native Language Font on a PC running Windows 95/98

These are generic instructions to help you download and install either a PC or Mac version of any Alaska Native Language fonts available through www.Alaskool.org. If you wish to check what fonts are available at Alaskool.org, please return to the Native Language Index page.

You might want to print these instructions to have them handy as you install the Native Language font that you have selected.

After you have downloaded the font (the font file ends with __.ttf) and saved it to your hard disk (remember what folder you saved it in):

  1. Click on Start Menu
  2. Select Settings then Control Panel
  3. In Control Panel click on the Fonts folder. A page showing all the fonts installed on your computer appears (c:\windows\fonts).
  4. In the c:\windows\fonts window, click on the File Menu and select Install New Font. You'll get a File Open type screen called Add Fonts.
  5. Select the Drive and Find the folder where you saved the new font. After you click on that folder, the font should appear in the List of Fonts as ( name of Native Language) Normal (True Type). Click once on this font then click on OK.

The Native Language font is now installed on your computer so you can view Native Language materials on the Native Studies Curriculum site.

Check Font Installation: The Native Language font should now be installed on your computer so you can view Native Language materials on the Native Studies Curriculum site. The Download page for the font shows a text and graphic version of the font. If the installation is correct, these will appear to be the same.

The Native Language font is also now available on your computer to use with your word processing programs or any other software that recognizes fonts. Any PC or Mac computer with the Native Language font installed can share documents using this font and the words will appear correctly. If documents created with the Native Language font are viewed on a computer without the font installed, other characters will be substituted for certain Native Language characters so that text will appear incorrectly.
